I spent the day sitting or sleeping. My older child and his family are slated to put their doggy to sleep tonight. Why? He jumped out of my son's pickup and gave a blood curdling scream. He could not walk on his right front leg. Off to the vet they went. His leg was not broken. It would have been easier to repair if it had been. The leg was casted but the small animal doctor said it would take so much to repair it...mentioning two surgeries with each costing $6000. The dog's leg would always be stiff. He could no longer run and play. My son's family--he, his wife, his twenty year old daughter, and eighteen year old son had a family meeting. Their consensus? It would not be fair to the dog to live a life of total stagnation. Yes, they called and told me last night they would all four be going with the dog and he would be put to sleep at 4:30 p.m. today. No matter how much I felt and said I was sorry, it was not enough to ease the pain of the dog member of their family being gone. Yes, I heard from my son late this evening. He had just told his sister that it was among the top 5 hardest things he had ever done in his 49 years. No matter how old your adult children become, the mother in you wants to take away or at least ease the pain. I'm sure I did neither.
