Which Verses in Joshua Will We Need This Week?

Last week I told my Wednesday night Women’s Bible Study class, “Joshua is one of my favorite books of the Bible.”

After reading this Old Testament book again this week, I thought “I may have to correct what I said—There is battle after battle described here.”

Then I thought again. Three things I’ve admired about Joshua are:

1. His obedient faith in God.

2. His great courage.

3. His dedication to God and His Word.

Perhaps God means to always be getting us ready to use us. Why—Joshua was 85 years old when he became a leader. There is still time for you and me. And as for battles, well—you and I have had some in our lives, too.

Battles of infertility, job loss, depression, cancer, and death to name a few for me. Perhaps you know others who have been divorced or battled something else. If you and I are honest, we have not liked those parts of our lives—still God has carried us through. We each may still be waiting to see how God will use any of those battles for good.

You may do like I did—searching through Joshua, I found verse after verse underlined previously when I’d needed encouragement and found it.

“Be strong and courageous, do not be discouraged nor afraid, for I the Lord your God will be with you wherever you may go.” Joshua 1:9.

“Do not let this Book of Law depart from your mouth, meditate on it day and night, so that you will be careful to do everything written in it.” Joshua 1:8.

“. . .you will know which way to go since you have never been this way before. Joshua 3:4b.”

“ . . .This was so that everybody on earth would recognize how strong God’s rescuing hand is. . .”Joshua 5:24a.

The commander of the Lord’s army replied, “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so. Joshua 5:15.

And Joshua said, “. . . But be very careful to keep the commandments and the law that Moses the servant of the Lord gave you: to love the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, to obey his commands, to hold fast to him and to serve him with all your heart and all your soul.” Joshua 22:5.

“. . .it was the Lord who fought for you.” Joshua 23:3b.

“You are to hold fast to the Lord your God, as you have until now.” Joshua 23:8.

“Now fear the Lord and serve him with faithfulness.” Joshua 24:14.

“. . .then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, . . . But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15.

. . . the people said to Joshua, “No! We will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:21.

Which of all these verses will you and I use this week?
